The big gap

With 40 years in the industry, Jeff knew a thing or two about delivering a beautiful, high-quality home. Clients were happy. Construction was smooth. There was a lot they were doing right.
But Jeff knew he was leaving money on the table. Loose expectations and ambiguous specs resulted in a ton of free work and cost overruns.
“Todd talks about having just enough information to get started, and we were the poster child for that. And that falls on me as the skipper of the ship.”
Time to get ‘er done
By approaching projects with a trades mentality, Jeff delivered an A+ product. But when it came to the business side of things, he realized there was potential for growth. After following the Construction Leading Edge podcast for a while, he decided to invest in the future of his business. He joined our Systematize Your Construction Business program and picked up the magnifying glass to examine his business practices.
Sometimes it’s kind of hard, especially for an old dog like me who has been doing this a long time…to be brutally honest with myself, to say, “You know, I’ve been talking about it. Now is the time to do something about it.
“Once I started to go through that part of the program, of documenting what the pre-construction process should look like for us, I felt like, “Yeah, this is the home run. This is the secret sauce.”
Nailing the handoff.
After taking a hard look at their handoff process, Jeff realized that most inefficiencies came from incomplete designs and loose specs. He and his team started to work through processes to gain more clarity on the front end of a project.
Fully custom.
Fully streamlined.
Jeff was concerned that making more upfront decisions would detract from the fully custom experience. But when his team started using their new systems on a custom home build, they discovered that it was possible to have a streamlined, fully custom experience. In fact, it became more fun for the client to watch the home get built. Not only was the client happier—Jeff saw the effect on the bottom line.
“It took a leap of faith to do this and I’m really happy I did.”
