Do you ever feel like your goals are just gathering dust, lost in the shuffle of day-to-day construction chaos? It’s the left-to-right thinking trap we’ve all fallen into – chasing shiny objects without a clear focus.
But what if there’s a way to set targets and actually turn them into reality? Imagine achieving your business, life, or health goals with precision and clarity. That’s the magic of right-to-left thinking.

Anything is Possible When You Go Right to Left
Right-to-left thinking is the process of working backward or coming up with a plan by answering what it takes to make something happen. Unlike left-to-right thinking, this approach gives you clarity on your business.
Another benefit of using this approach is it encourages people to look beyond the traditional ways of solving a problem or doing things. This, in turn, can lead to innovative strategies and creative solutions when dealing with issues.
But what I love the most about using right-to-left thinking is it allows business owners to make better decisions. By following this approach, business owners can look at all sides of an issue before making a decision.
So, if you’re tired of constantly putting out fires, right-to-left thinking might just be the game-changer you’ve been searching for.
How to Infuse Right-to-Left Thinking into Your Business
Whether you’re just starting your construction business or have been doing it for a while but want to take it to the next level, this approach works either way. And there are five ways that you can make right-to-left thinking work for you.
Big Picture Strategic Planning
Start by asking yourself the big questions: What do you want from your business? What’s your dream lifestyle? How involved do you want to be? Then, create a 5-year business plan by envisioning the future and working your way backward.
Doing this exercise clarifies what you want and what you need and don’t need to focus on.
Financials
Ah, money. Who doesn’t want to discuss the financials of running a construction business?
When using right-to-left thinking in the financial aspect of your business, you need to come up with a net profit target for the business. But you must be specific and not just throw in some random numbers.
Set a net profit target for your business by asking, “How much do I need to support my dream lifestyle?” Break it down into yearly revenue targets and then monthly targets for each project. Once the numbers are set, craft an execution plan for each project that answers the question, “What would it take to generate this amount of revenue on this project this month?”
Sales
Sales may seem an elusive topic for business owners, but you can apply right-to-left thinking to drive sales to your business. Since you’ve already determined the lifestyle you want and your revenue target for each month, you need to execute a plan on how to generate your target revenue in sales each year.
Projects
Projects often come with challenges, from delays, missing selections, budget busts, etc. The secret to success? Nailing the handoff. It’s not just about having a great team or top-notch equipment – it’s about having all the information you need to finish the project and not just enough information to get it started.
