Starting a Business During a Recession
Starting a business during a recession is the last thing anyone would do.
But Alex, along with his wife, defied the odds and left his teaching and coaching jobs for five years.
How bad could it be, right?
Well, leaving his teaching and coaching jobs for five years and starting a construction business turned out to be the best decision he had made.
They started cherry-picking some construction jobs here and there until the business grew into what it is now – a leading Tennessee-based construction company specializing in custom-built and spec homes.
3 Key Concepts for Business Growth
Running a construction business for years was no walk in the park, that’s for sure. And you know what really gave Alex a headache before he hopped on board with our Systematize Your Construction Business (SYCB) program? It was the pesky problem of inconsistency.
You see, they’d have some years where projects kept rolling in steadily, but then there were those slow years that made business feel at a snail’s pace. And that inconsistency made it tough for Alex to plan ahead properly.
How can you plan for the future when you’re not sure what the next year will bring? No wonder his team felt like they were being pulled in a million different directions.
So he finally took the leap and joined our SYCB program. And he put these three key concepts in place to grow his custom home building company – The Big Five, Team Sync, and Strategic Networking.
The Big Five
Alex would ask his team about their big five daily activities that each member can focus on. Doing this will set them up for success, knowing that they can accomplish the “what” in the accountability chart.
Team Sync
Every Thursday, Alex and his crew would kick off each meeting by sharing how a team member displayed their vision or how somebody else exceeded the client’s expectations. And then they’d go on tackling the pressing issues that they need to solve, making sure nothing falls through the cracks.
Strategic Network
Alex isn’t just about building homes; he’s also building relationships. He strategically developed this concept to build his own network of architects and realtors, where Gregg Homebuilding Company would be the preferred choice for these partners. It’s like bringing them in as part of the company’s sales team.
And how’s life different now after putting all these systems in place?
Alex is proud to say that…
“I feel like I’m usually excited about starting the week off. And if you’re looking forward to it, I think that’s probably a sign that things are going okay. I can go home and enjoy my family and then feel a great vibe and energy from our team members. You can see them enjoying what we’re doing and not stressed out. And so you can finally see those fruits from all the hard work.”
